Let's start with reviewing our mirror choices.

Hi! Krista here. We get this question almost daily on how to select the perfect mirror for someone’s smart mirror or photo-booth. Every time, the questions are the same so I decided to make a guide! To get started, here are the specifications for the mirror types  you would be considering for the project:

Glass Two Way Mirror
70% Reflective
11% Transparent
Bronze Tint

Glass Smart Mirror
70% Reflective
30% Transparent
Warm Tone

Acrylic Two Way Mirror
70% Reflective
30% Transparent
Silver Tone

Dielectric Mirror
30% Reflective
70% Transparent
Color Neutral

Most people just want to know:

Can they use the acrylic for their project?

That’s a loaded question to say the least! There are many factors. I want you to select with confidence the correct mirror that you will be happy with.

Your mirror is smaller than 24″ x 48″
It’s not going in a bathroom
It’s going into a frame
You’re not using touch
You want cheap shipping
The mirror is larger than the screen

Why the size cap?

The acrylic material is naturally bendy so when the thickness is 1/8″, the maximum size we recommend is 12″ x 24″, or 24″ x 28″ if you go with the thicker material.

Insider note: If you are doing touch and go with the acrylic, the IR Touch Overlay will literally interefere due to bendiness. DO NOT DO THIS.

Bathroom Smart Mirrors

Acrylic and damp environments just don’t mix! The acrylic mirror coating is so fragile that the coating itself will degrade rapidly in  a bathroom setting.

Acrylic does have a plastic edge,
so you’ll want to cover that sh*t up!

Now that we have that out of the way-

Let's check out the glass options.

Glass Two Way Mirror
70% Reflective
11% Transparent
Bronze Tint

Glass Smart Mirror
70% Reflective
30% Transparent
Warm Tone

Dielectric Mirror
30% Reflective
70% Transparent
Color Neutral

For one reason or another, you’ve decided at this point to go with glass. There are two main configurations for a smart mirror. Either the mirror and display are the same size, or the mirror is larger than the display.

If the mirror & display are the same size: the Dielectric Mirror will give you the best display quality and is color neutral. It’s so transparent that you would normally see the outline of the TV, but in this case the frame covers the bezel to give the absolute best look.

When the mirror is larger than the display, having a high reflection definitely helps conceal the TV completely. In smaller sizes, the Glass Two Way Mirror and Glass Smart Mirror are comparably priced. For larger mirrors, the Glass Two Way Mirror is a great budget option.

The Glass Smart Mirror comes in 3mm and 6mm thicknesses and provides superior display quality, making the screen 3 times brighter than the Glass Two Way Mirror.

Touch Technologies: IR Touch Overlay vs. Touch Foil

IR Touch Overlay

The display, mirror and frame must all be the same size for the IR Touch Overlay to work. This is because the IR frame sits on top of the mirror. For it to map the touch correctly with the infrared light, it must be precisely placed so that what you’re touching coincides with what is on the screen.

Things to check before you buy an IR Touch Overlay

Make sure IR, TV and mirror size are all the same
Check operating system compatability
Buy from a trusted supplier

Touch Foil

The touch foil is used when your setup has a smaller display and a larger mirror. The foil goes behind the mirror and in front of the display, attaching directly to the glass.

Things to check before you buy a touch foil:

Make sure it works with mirrors that have aluminum in the mirror coating
Look at the specs to be sure it can handle 3mm to 6mm thick glass
Make sure it is compatible with your operating system and display
Find a trusted supplier
